Green Man Group is a double bass ensemble comprised of ten high school students from the private class of Barry Green who works for theSan Francisco Symphony Education Department, UC Santa Cruz, and former Principal Bassist with the Cincinnati Symphony.
The ensemble has performed at music conventions for the American String Teacher Association in Reno Nevada, Santa Clara CA, The International Society of Bassist Conventions in Iowa City and in San Francisco, the Las Vegas Bass Workshop, The Golden Gate Bass Camp as well as at various venues throughout Northern California.
Their original repertoire includes musical styles of classical, folk, rock, funk, Latin, jazz with poplar American and Irish influences. The program includes a dramatic opening in a blackout wearing green glow masks, with illumination on the bassist’s hands, bows and the basses all playing on one bass. The concert transitions to an original rock tune Green Man commissioned from Tony Osborne.
The students sing in Chinese and play the American folk song Oh Shenendoah. Irish and New Orleans dance rhythms come to life in Eric Hansen’s Peach Fuzz Marmut. and Jamba Mon. Other tunes include the funky On the Prow from Kristin Korb, John Clayton’s jazz Da’ Basses Groove, Rachael McAndrew’s Celtic Lament, and Leonard Bernstein’s America.
